Summary
It is common knowledge that the German electricity and gas markets were among the first in continental Europe which were fully opened under the EC liberalisation Directives 96/92 and 98/30. The old Energy Industry Act was replaced by the new Energy Industry Act of April 1998, and simultaneously the rules allowing for sector exemptions under the Act against Restraints in Competition were abolished.
