UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Joke Waller-Hunter as Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC in 2002.
Ms Joke Waller-Hunter was formerly Director of the Environment Directorate of the OECD from February 1998-April 2002. From 1994-1998, she was Director of the Division for Sustainable Development which support the UNCSD. Prior to 1994, she worked for the Netherlands Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment, VROM. As the VROM Deputy Director for international environmental affairs, she was actively involved in the preparations of the UN Conference in Environment and Development, Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro 1992.
She also was Director for strategic planning, responsible for the preparations for the second National Environmental Policy Plan of the Netherlands. Joke Waller-Hunter started her professional career with the Provincial Government of North Holland where she worked as environmental information officer and coordinator for environmental planning.
