Over the years, the University operated without the Faculty of Law despite its strategic location in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria known for its high deposit of petroleum resources as well as biodiversity. Specifically, the law programme of the University seeks among others to train lawyers who have good knowledge of oil and gas and environmental issues and laws. Despite being in academics, Dr. Nelson Uwoh Sobere is an active legal practitioner. Dr. Uwoh Sobere practices under the law firm of Tuduru Ede SAN & Co with keen interest in environmental litigation. Over the years, the firm has pursued and contested cases against the multinational companies operating in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria on issues relating to environmental pollution from the activities of the major oil and gas companies exploring and prospecting petroleum in the area. The law firm now has a wide expertise on issues relating to oil and gas operations and environmental protection with high level of clientele.
