Juan A. Rodriguez joined Sullivan & Cromwell in 2000. He studied law at the University of Exeter and the University of Aix-Marseille, graduating in October 1987 with the degree LL.B. (European) Hons. He was admitted as a Solicitor in 1991.
Juan Rodriguez specializes in all aspects of EC competition law and has particular experience in relation to the oil and gas sector. Prior to joining Sullivan & Cromwell in 2000, he was EC Antitrust Counsel at BP, a role that involved advising all of the BP Group businesses on day-to-day competition law matters, including designing and implementing compliance training, and on major transactions such as the BP/Amoco merger, BP Amoco's subsequent acquisition of ARCO and BP's intervention in the review of other mergers involving its competitors. He served as Chairman of the European Petroleum Industry Association (EUROPIA) competition law action group from early 1996 until September 2000, where, among other assignments, he was involved in leading the oil industry lobby in regard to the current EC rules on vertical restraints. He also participated in the UK Offshore Operators' lobbying regarding the application of UK competition law to North Sea gas production and sale agreements.
Recent matters in which he has been involved include representing Aventis in the EC review of Sanofi-Synthélabo's hostile bid for Aventis, advising a consortium developing a major gas field outside the EU, representing Cytec Industries in the EC review of its acquisition of UCB's chemicals division, representing Sidel in the EC review of Tetra Laval's bid for Sidel, representing Goldman Sachs in the EC review of its acquisition of Queen's Moat Houses, representing Pharmacia in the EC review of Pfizer's acquisition of Pharmacia, representing IntesaBci in the EC review of the joint venture between IntesaBci and Lazard and representing Renault in the review by national competition authorities of Claas's acquisition of Renault Agriculture. He is a member of the European Competition Lawyers Forum and is EC correspondent for the Canadian Competition Record.
Mr. Rodriguez is listed as a leading practitioner of Competition Law in the 2005 edition of The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers and in the 2004 edition of its sister publication, The GCR 100. He is also profiled in the 2004 40 under 40 directory of rising stars in competition law.
