Spurred on by its Kyoto obligations, in recent years the UK government has formulated some promising policy objectives in relation to renewable energy. These include increasing the proportion of the nation's electricity that is generated from renewable sources. At the start of 2000, when the UK government developed and announced its new policy in relation to renewable energy, around 2.8 per cent of the country's electricity was produced from renewable sources.
