The extractive industries have been the subject of scrutiny since the 1990s on human rights grounds. This article examines the evolution of corporate responsibility in this industry and some of the key issues facing companies operating in countries with a history of human rights violations or poor governance from the perspective of Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international human rights NGO that has worked on these issues throughout the world.
