Summary
With the enactment of the Electricity Act, 2003 in June 2003, India initiated a much-needed statutory overhaul of its power sector. In doing so, the Act provides all countries in South Asia with an example of the type of reforms necessary for establishing an open, competitive market for power trading. The Act is directed at institutional and regulatory reforms for inter-state and intra-state power trading within India.
