Introduction
Throughout recent history, the utilization of coal has been perceived as an environmentally-unfriendly option to meeting global energy demands. This is, in part, due to the potential impacts its by-products, such as CO 2 emissions, have on the Earth's atmosphere and, consequently, overall climate. However, since coal is a relatively inexpensive resource that exists in abundant quantities, it is still viewed as a favorable source of energy. Therefore, it is likely that this fossil fuel will continue to play a significant role in meeting future energy demands for years to come. ...
