Abstract
The paper examines the environmental impacts of oil exploitation on the Niger Delta host populations of Nigeria. It notes that oil exploitation has resulted in environmental despoliation of host communities from oil spillages, gas flaring etc. It posits that this has serious implications on the livelihood of such populations who are mostly farmers and fishermen. The paper traces the problem to the lack of sound environmental policy, management and inadequate regulation of the sector.
