Introduction
In September 2001 the EC passed legislation on the promotion of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (Directive 2001/77/EC). Although the deadline for implementation runs until 27 October 2003, Austria - traditionally in the forefront of environmental legislation - has already transposed this directive into law. However, in this case it was not necessarily an urge to save the environment that led to the speedy implementation: the socialist party, whose approval was necessary to pass the amendments to the Gas Business Act, linked their approval to the passing of a uniform law ...
