Alaska's North Slope has large natural gas reserves estimated at 30 trillion cubic feet and could be larger still as oil and gas companies search for more reserves. The problem has always been that the reserves are too far from market. Now that U.S. and world prices for natural gas have increased substantially it is finally feasible to build a pipeline to transport the gas from the North Slope through Alaska and Canada to the lower 48 states of America.
