Introduction
The Commission has issued a Communication concerning treatment of competition cases in light of the expiry of the ECSC Treaty on 23 July 2002. It deals with antitrust, mergers, and state aid. Under the ECSC regime the Commission had exclusive jurisdiction to deal with coal and steel cases under articles 65 and 66 of the ECSC Treaty. With the transition to the EC regime however, the Commission and the national authorities have parallel powers to apply Community competition law.
