Introduction
The Council has adopted a Regulation (with Denmark and Sweden abstaining) establishing a new framework for national aid to the coal industry after the expiry of the ECSC Treaty on 23 July 2002. The Regulation specifies the maximum intensity of aid in relation to costs incurred and the phasing out of aid over time, consistent with the general trend towards a reduction in state aid.
