Abstract
The energy-poor countries of southern Europe depend to a great extent on supplies of gas from the Arab Maghreb and from the Levant. Gas imports flow over and under the Mediterranean Sea as well as through Morocco and Tunisia. Moreover, further east, Turkey is important as a land-bridge for planned gas imports into Europe from Russia, Iran and Turkmenistan. In the future other gas imports may be expected from Saudi Arabia, the Arabian peninsular and from Mesopotamia. These imports could also reach Europe through Turkey and through Egypt.
