The full impact of the BP disaster is unclear, but whatever the final assessment is will
inevitably be one of the seminal moments in petroleum history, a hydrocarbon 9/11. The attitude
of the public toward petroleum, toward government regulation, toward offshore drilling, and
toward corporate responsibility will never be the same. At the risk of being premature let us
attempt to assess these changes and impacts.
