Introduction
Over the past couple of years there has been a tremendous growth in cross-border trade in oil and gas. Due to the remote location of oil and gas reserves the need for cross-border pipelines that will carry oil and natural gas to far distances has become apparent. In 1982 the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) conceived the idea of the West African Gas Pipeline as a vehicle to promote regional integration and economic development.
