Abstract
The exploration for and exploitation of crude oil in the Niger Delta of Nigeria takes a huge toll on the environment. Oil exploration and exploitation has resulted in the pollution of lands and destruction of forest vegetation as a result of oil spillages; increased emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as a result of gas flaring; and pollution of rivers, streams and lagoons as a result of continuous dumping of toxic oil waste in such rivers, streams and lagoons.
