China Growing Use of Gas: Substitution for Coal or Additional Energy Consumption

Introduction
December 2011 - In the USA today, the growing production of shale gas has generated two policy debates. The first concerns the negative impact environmental impacts of the production of shale gas on local ground water. The second debate has much wider implications and raises the issue of whether the sudden availability of cheap supplies of natural gas in the USA will encourage growing energy consumption or the substitution of coal by natural gas. Which route is taken will have a great impact on the USA's carbon emissions.
