Global Shipping Patterns and the Effects of the Great Arctic Melt: Separating Mirage From Reality

Abstract
The Arctic Ocean is melting rapidly. The Northwest Passage over Canada and the Northern Sea Route over Russia have been largely ice-free for the past five summers. The entire Arctic Ocean may soon be open for at least six months a year. Commercial shipping is already under way through the two existing passages. This paper examines the question whether the two existing passages have a viable future if the entire Arctic Ocean opens eventually.
