Introduction
On 16 May 2002 the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania passed the New Law on Energy. The Law came into effect from 1 July 2002. It set up the legal preconditions for effective management of the energy sector in Lithuania which is pursuing EU membership. The enactment of the Law contributed to closing the Energy chapter of membership negotiations between the European Union and the Republic of Lithuania.
