Deregulation of Japanese Electricity Market after Fukushima

Abstract
This paper investigates the transformation of Japanese energy policy in the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima disaster, analysing the measures proposed and implemented by the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) administration toward the deregulation of the domestic electricity market. This major policy shift occurred as a response to strong public opposition to nuclear energy, which forced the DPJ government to declare the nuclear phaseout by 2040.
