Abstract
Since the discovery of oil in commercial quantity in 1956, the Nigerian economy has witnessed a major shift from an agro-based economy to what can now be described as a mono-economy almost solely dependent on crude exports. While a sizeable amount of Nigeria's oil production has taken place onshore, recent developments (discoveries, the decision of major players to divest onshore assets and focus on offshore operations) suggests offshore production is the future of Nigeria's oil industry, implying a further increase in offshore installations.
