Abstract
In February 2019, the Supreme Court of Norway gave a verdict (the "2019 Decision") which upheld the punishment imposed by a Norwegian trial court for catching snow crab on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in the Svalbard Fisheries Protection Zone without obtaining a permit from Norwegian authorities. The Norwegian Supreme Court decided that snow crab falls within the purview of sedentary species as stipulated under Article 77(4) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
