Competition in the electricity sector in Great Britain

Introduction
p>Government policy since 1989 has been progressively to open the market to competition and to limit direct Government involvement in the sector. In 1990 it disaggregated the previously state owned, vertically integrated utility and transferred it into private ownership.
The statutory framework for the electricity sector is set out in the Electricity Act 1989, as amended by the Utilities Act 2000 (the '1989 Act'). Within this framework, the independent sector regulator formulates and pursues initiatives for the sector in accordance with its statutory duties.
