Biodiversity Protection and Management in Oil & Gas Upstream Operations in Mozambique
Article from: OGEL 1 (2026), in Environment
Abstract
Mozambique's economic development is heavily reliant on the exploitation of natural resources. However, the protection and conservation of biological heritage must not be overlooked. Extraction activities must comply with environmental protection requirements and aim to avoid or mitigate impacts on species and ecosystems. Legislation also mandates biodiversity recovery, restoration, and rehabilitation measures, as well as biodiversity offsets and compensatory mechanisms, which may involve monetary contributions or equivalent ecological actions.
