Liberalisation of the Spanish gas market

Summary
Due to Spain's limited natural gas reserves, virtually all of its gas demand has to be satisfied by imports. To ensure security and diversity of supply, Spain opted for early market opening. Current legislation enabled full liberalisation as early as 1 January 2003 entitling all Spanish customers freely to choose their gas suppliers. However, the Spanish gas sector still suffers from various shortcomings which the existing regulatory framework is trying to tackle.
