Summary
Two years ago the electricity shortage surprised the Brazilian people. The supply situation changed substantially in 2002 and 2003 turning the shortage into an overcapacity. Yet, the nation is still sceptical regarding the future of its electricity sector. The country's economic recession explains the present oversupply of electricity. In fact, the Brazilian economy grew only 1.5 per cent in 2002 and the prospect for 2003 is similar or even worse.
