p>On 2 May 2001, Turkey adopted the new Natural Gas Market law (Law no 4646). The Law came into force immediately, but its implementation was subject to a 18-month transition period. Law no 4646 is aimed at introducing competition into the Turkish natural gas market as well as at harmonising national legislation with EU directives on internal energy market. It also strengthens the role of the newly-established Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA).
