Summary
The history of gas pollution in Nigeria is as old as that of oil pollution, since associated gas is a component of oil. Gas pollution has been with us since 1956 when oil was discovered in commercial quantity at Oloibiri in the then Yenagoa province of the Niger Delta area. Since that time, billions of standard cubic feet of gas are being flared daily from our oil fields. This is environmental degradation of a monumental proportion.
