Introduction
The International Monetary Fund constitutes the pillar of the world monetary system and part of the Bretton Woods system. Its main mandate is to provide short-term loans to countries with balance-of-payments difficulties, advise on monetary policy - and its advice comes with the robust leverage of its lending. Energy has not been a particular issue for the IMF - apart from its involvement in the recycling of petrodollars to oil-importing developing countries in the 1970s.
