Renewable Energy Policies and Legal Frameworks: A Comparative Analysis of East African Economies
Published 13 May 2026
Abstract
This article analyses energy transition pathways in East African economies, focusing on the adoption of renewable energy, implementing energy efficiency measures, and deploying emerging technologies such as hydrogen energy and electric mobility. There is a study of the energy mix within the East African Community, considering the dependence on hydropower and given the largely untapped potential of geothermal, wind, and solar resources.
Strategic synergy between relevant laws and policies within individual Partner States as well as regional collaboration are of critical importance. An appropriate regional approach should confront infrastructural deficiencies, regulatory fragmentation and inadequate investment flows within effective policy and legal frameworks. This requires purposive, effective and pragmatic navigation of the Treaty establishing the East African Community.
