Call for papers: OGEL special issue on "Offshore Petroleum Exploration and Production: Challenges and Responses"
22 October 2012
Note: Published as OGEL 1 (2014) - Offshore Petroleum Exploration and Production: Challenges and Responses
Oil, Gas and Energy Law Intelligence (www.ogel.org) invites submissions for a special issue on Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration and Production. The guest editors for this special issue are Dr. Sergei Vinogradov, Director of the LLM Programme, Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee and Simon Amaduobogha, PhD candidate, Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy, University of Dundee.
There are indications that despite the call for renewable energy there is continuous increase in the quest for oil and gas. With the depletion of reserves onshore the search is increasingly being focused on oceans. The pursuit of oil and gas has driven exploration and production offshore into geographically and geologically complex environments such as ultra-deep waters and the Arctic. These difficult conditions increase the potential risk of accidents that may result in serious marine pollution. The special issue would address the legal, economic, environmental and policy aspects of offshore exploration and production activities.
Thus, we invite submissions of papers and studies covering various legal regimes and responses (international, regional and national regulations, environmental challenges of offshore oil and gas operations, economic and policy issues) relating to offshore oil and gas activities.
Some of the topical issues that could be examined are:
- Environmental challenges of operations in deep waters;
- Prevention of accidental pollution;
- Emergency response;
- Liability issues especially in the context of accidental pollution from offshore operations;
- Balancing economic interests and environmental protection of the marine environment;
- Regional approaches to regulating offshore oil and gas production;
- Issues of operational standards and the diversity of national legal regimes.
