Michael Bunter, the author of this 180 page monograph, is an English petroleum geologist who lived and worked in Libya (1968-1970) in the oilfields during the critical last years of the Idrisite monarchy. He was there during the Ghaddaffi coup and also through the first year and a half of the new Ghadaffi government. This was a time when radicalism was to change the world of Libyan and north African oil and gas fundamentally.

In this completely new work the author recounts the complex politics of Libya and also its history and attempts to relate current events to the evolution of Libyan geopolitics.

This monograph is aimed at the new ventures groups of the international oil and gas industry, at other current and future investors in Libya and north Africa, to consumer-country opinion-formers as well as to public and private oil and gas consumers, and to others who may need to take long-term views on developments in Libya. It is a companion to the 350 page book "The Libyan Petroleum Industry in the Twenty First century: the Upstream, Midstream and Downstream Handbook"

Amongst little-known incidents dealt with in this monograph are:

  • The complexities of the tribal and ethnic groups in Libya: the Arabs, the Berbers, the Tibbu and others. These may be expected to take roles after the expiry of Ghadaffi-politics and his centralising efforts.
  • The evolution of Saharan politics, the Libyan Senusi Islamists and other politico-religious movements. In addition the recent military support for Ghadaffi expressed by some young north African Tuareg fighters ... their possible connection to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, AQIM
  • The remaining terrorist links forged by Ghadaffi, including his involvement in the so far unrevealed kidnappings of foreigners in 1979-80. These links may not have been completely broken
  • The Italian link and the suspected connection of the Ghadaffi coup to pre-Second World War Italian politics

Mr Bunter provides a political history of Libya from Ottoman times to the present and shows how Mediterranean geopolitics have informed this obscure, fascinating and potentially important country.
