George S. Akpan holds an LL.B (Hons) degree in law from the University of Uyo, Nigeria; LL.M from the University of Lagos, Nigeria; LL.M in Petroleum Law and Policy from the Centre for Energy Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy, University of Dundee.

Akpan recently obtained a PhD from the National University of Singapore in Foreign Investment and Natural Resources Law. He worked as a lawyer in the law firm of P. T. Affangideh & Associates, Calabar, Nigeria. And as a law teacher in universities, including the University of Uyo, Nigeria, where he was responsible for developing and delivering lectures in Oil and Gas Law. Recently, he served as a Consultant to the section on Foreign Investment and International Investment Agreements at UNCTAD, where he was involved in training programmes for government officials in Africa and Asia.

Dr. Akpan is presently a JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellow at the United Nations University, Institute of Advanced Studies, Yokohama, Japan. At UNU-IAS Akpan works with the Sustainable Development Governance Programme team. His work is on how international investment agreements could be used to promote sustainable development in developing countries. His research interests include legal and policy issues affecting foreign investment in developing countries, natural resources exploitation and host populations issues in foreign investments. Dr Akpan has also written widely in these areas.
